The Pathogens COBRE expands the research footprint and infrastructure at Rhode Island Hospital through the development of a vibrant and dynamic program center which identifies and nurtures talented investigators whose research focus is to reduce or mitigate the burden of disease caused by highly prevalent pathogens. Support for this crucial area of research is accomplished by funding pilot and project awards to jumpstart the careers of a cadre of young investigators.
Pilot Projects
A Pilot Project is a small-scale, 12-month research award offered by the Pathogens COBRE program aimed at supporting early-stage or exploratory research that can generate preliminary data for future applications, including the potential to develop into future COBRE Research Projects. While facility of all ranks are eligible, priority consideration is given to early-stage and new investigators. Competitive submissions focus on translational research on pathogens prevalent globally which may also impact the health of Americans, feature use of the Pathogen’s Pharmacology Core, and have a strong likelihood of publication and /or future external funding. Funding range may be from $15,000-$50,000.

Research Projects
Research Project Leader (RPL) Awards support investigators who are advancing knowledge in the field of translational approaches to a pathogen of significance. RPLs qualify either as NIH Early Stage Investigators (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/glossary.htm#EarlyStageInvestigator(ESI)) (ESIs) or as New Investigators (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/glossary.htm#NewInvestigator) and must hold a faculty position. Each RPL can expected to be supported for 2-3 years with the Center providing mentorship to ensure transition to independent R01 level-funding.
A call for Research Project Letter of Intent will be announced and solicited when a Research Project slot becomes open. Interested applicants will submit a project summary, specific aims and Other Support Documentation to Sue Johnson.
